The House Among the Pines

Residential

The House Among the Pines is conceived as a quiet retreat suspended between earth and forest, a home that dissolves into the timeless pine groves of Ras Al Harf. Designed as a place of stillness and grounding, the project embraces the landscape not as a backdrop but as a defining architectural force. Every gesture of the building responds directly to the terrain, the light, and the vertical rhythm of the surrounding trees. The house rests on a series of stone terraces that negotiate the natural slope of the site. These retaining walls—crafted from locally sourced stone—anchor the project to its topography, creating a sequence of platforms that extend living spaces outward into the forest. The pool, placed at the lower terrace, mirrors the sky and the canopy above, reinforcing the home’s dialogue with its environment. The architectural form is a sculpted volume of warm white plaster and natural stone, articulated with clean lines and softened edges. Its massing shifts subtly as it rises, framing views toward the dense pine landscape and allowing morning light to wash across the façade. Large windows and carefully carved openings bring the forest indoors, ensuring that every room is touched by filtered sunlight and the gentle movement of foliage. Materiality is intentionally restrained. Rough plaster, stone, and timber define a palette rooted in the vernacular textures of Lebanese mountain architecture, yet expressed through a contemporary lens. The resulting atmosphere is one of calm sophistication—architecture that feels both familiar and distinctly present. Landscape and architecture intertwine through layered greenery: cascading willows, pine shadows, and elevated planters that soften transitions between built form and nature. Together, they create an immersive setting where the boundaries between inside and outside blur, offering residents a continuous connection to the forest. The House Among the Pines is a sanctuary, an exploration of how architecture can heighten the qualities of a place while remaining unobtrusive. A home that listens before it speaks, shaped by the silence of Ras Al Harf and the enduring presence of its pines.
